Thanks for allowing me aboard the good ship Oppositelock. I’ve been commenting on and enjoying your posts for a while.
Please enjoy my ‘85 4Runner, affectionately dubbed the RatRunner what with all the rust.
I have a love for old Toyotas that sometimes borders on the Zoidbergian.
Bonus vertigo SR5 seats and Steve Winwood cassette for your time.

Man I do love the 1st gen 4Runners. 85 still had the solid front axle right?

Yep. 86 was the first year for IFS.

If I recall, 85 was the last year.

Extra awesome. Have you done anything to it?

Not as of yet. Just some new tires. Roughly 32". I really want to just restore it to its former glory. Either that or a light duty trail runner. The rust is beginning to win though.

Yeah. 4Runners don't hold up to salt or water well.

Even though my 2nd Gen has a forever home, I still want a 1st Gen. And a FJ40, 60, 70, 80... I’ll stop there.

No lie man. Body on frame Toyotas are something special. I've had two 2nd gens and this one is slower, and less practical, but somehow more fun. Also 117K original miles.

Eventually I’d like to 1UZ swap mine, but for now it’s fine, especially since it’s no longer daily driven.

A buddy of mine in college had one of these, in red. Is the 85 one of the ones that you can take the “top” off of if you take out all the necessary screws and lift it off like a truck cap?

Yeah any one of them from 84-89. It’s 16 bolts and the damn thing is heavy as hell I don’t care what anyone says.

Yeah I seem to remember that being true but it seemed like a good idea at the time, then we had to put it back on. I think that was worse.

I took mine off last year. It was a blast but it's the kind of thing you want to do and leave off for a while. There's actually a sequence to putting the bolts back in and even torque specs in the service manual.

I always have problems remembering if it was 85 or 86 when they switched

I should have mentioned. It's good to have another 4Runner OPPO. I have a 99 SR5.

Nice. I always wanted a 3rd gen. My family has had something like 15 Toyotas over the last 30 years. 11 of them 4Runners. But never a 3rd gen.

I highly recommend the 3rd gen. I promise I'm only mildly biased.
